Stephanie E., was built by the well-known boat builder, Dan Jones in Sausalito, Calif. in 1980, She is built to the lines and plans found in John Gardner’s Book: Building Classic Small Craft, Vol. 1. She has a lapstrake hull planked in Port Orford Cedar, and copper riveted. Black Locust keel and ribs. Dan Jones sold the boat to his friend (and NW School of Wooden Boat Building instructor) Jody Boyle around 2006. Jody Boyle owned the boat for 14 years until we purchased her in 2020.
Several planks were replaced using Western Red Cedar. New rubrails were added, and the centerboard box has been completely rebuilt. The boat is traditionally maintained and finished. She is a beautiful example of the original Whitehall, and would feel right at home in the 19th or early 20th century
(but living in the 21st century!).
The boat was originally named the STEPHANIE E., after the builder’s wife. There is a lightly carved silhouette of a Snow Goose in flight on the transom. We loving call her the “SNOW GOOSE”.
Currently, the boat is used for sailing and rowing the Salish Sea on short cruises and overnight adventures. A detachable side-mount, for a 2.5hp Yamaha outboard motor has been constructed to extend the cruising range and to give a third propulsion option, in addition to the oars and sail.
The “Snow Goose” is currently homeported in Port Townsend, Washington, and owned by Mark Wade.
