Iain Oughtred’s spin on the “canoe yawl” concept, the Eun Mara design started as a commission for a trailerable coastal cruiser for use in the waters off Scotland. At 19′-9″ x 6′-8″ and a bilgeboards-up draft of 1′-8″ she is fairly easy to launch off most boat ramps. Weighing in at approximately 1100 kilograms the boat is within the towing capacity of most modern SUVs.
The boat was built over the course of 3 years in a former two-car garage now converted into a boatshop by her owner/captain on Bainbridge Island. Her construction is glued lapstrake using 3/8″ marine plywood and douglas fir for structural timbers. Twin bilgeboards, built into the settee berths, are used instead a of single larger centerboard to open up space in the roomy cabin. A snug, deep cockpit adds a sense of security when sailing in a hard chance and creates a comfortable place to be when cruising in the “shoulder seasons” or making use of the odd sunny PNW winter day.
