Schooner Adventuress is owned and operated by Washington State nonprofit Sound Experience. Since 1989, the organization has delivered youth on-the-water environmental and maritime programs to more than 35,000 children and teens throughout the Salish Sea region. Adventuress is a National Historic Landmark (NHL), one of only two NHL sailing ships still in active USCG-licensed operation on the West Coast.โฏIn 2019, Adventuress saw the completion of a decade-long $2.5 million full restoration of the 1913 schooner with support from the National Park Service, WA State Heritage Capital Projects Fund and private donors.โฏIn 2016, the Governorโs office namedโฏAdventuressโฏPuget Soundโsโฏofficialโฏenvironmental tall ship for its commitment to education of our regionโs youth.โฏ
Sound Experienceโs programs aboardโฏAdventuressโฏinclude day and overnight trips that connect children and teenagers with the regionโs marine ecology and involves them in hands-on learning about emerging issues such as ocean acidification andโฏmicroplastics. On board the ship, participants hoist the sails, takeโฏthe helm, haul on lines, prepare meals in the galley, stand anchor watch under the stars, lead shipboard chores and learn from the professional maritime crew and educators. Participants come from diverse and underserved communities through collaborative community partnerships such as youth groups, Boy and Girl Scouts, and community groups such as Maritime Blue and Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle. Sound Experience also serves public, private schools, and homeschools from the Pacific Northwest, including Career Technical Education (CTE) programs from WA State Public School Skills Centers. For many of the vulnerable orโฏat-risk youth who come aboard,โฏAdventuressโฏhas been a turning point in their lives, providing themโฏwith rare experiencesโฏof respect, community, and support.โฏโฏ
