Joyce is a 16 foot 1928 Mukilteo boat built by the Losvar family in Mukilteo Wa. She is powered by a 1928 Wisconsin gas motor. She is an open recreational fishing boat originally designed as a rental for sports fishermen around the area. There was a demand in the 20’s thru the 50’s for rental boats so many families engaged from Tacoma to the San Juans designing and building these boats. This amazing fleet of boats are disappearing today. Other families include the Young family building a very popular Paulsbo boat, the Stradley family building the Cama Beach boat, Ray Lichtenberger of Rays Restaurant and boathouse in Seattle as well as Thea Foss of Foss Tug and Barge in Seattle had many a rentals. just to name a few. These boats are a big part of Puget Sounds history that are fading fast. Its just a part of history here in our region.
Being that Joyce is one of a very few boats from those days of open fishing boats the feeling is more of a historical one. Granted her interior is a bit different from her original build. I kinda upgraded
Her interior from red cedar to yellow and added a bit more seating. I replaced ribs that were deteriorated along with other compromised parts. She had been outdoors turned over in someoneโs back yard for 20 some years. Iโm sure critters used her as their condo. When asked by the Tosdaleโs to restore her I had only one bad Polaroid picture of her bow. Not a lot to go by. As a young boy my cousin and I had access to a similar boat I believe built by Reinell. 16 foot wooden boat with a single cylinder gas motor. I sort of drew a comparison to
the interior and โ winged it โ. Joyce needed to be rescued. Like an old friend once said to me about art โ you take an old piece of barn wood and shine it up like a jewel โ.
