I first fell in love with the boat Hav Heston, an original snekke imported from Norway, when I moved here in 2006 to go to the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding. Now, as an instructor, when there was a need for a lapstrake boat, I jumped at the chance to commision one of my own. Antonio Salguero of Coastwise Marine Design did some updating and gave a design to work to based off the original lines. Otak is built with a Purpleheart Keel, with all other centerline timbers,as well as the sawn framing made of Black Locust. She is planked in Larch, a reasonable substitute for Pitch Pine that the originals were planked in. The sails are made by Northwest Sails and Canvas, the owners of which are the owners of the original and helped so much with information in the build!
