Scherzo

In Festival Boats, Festival Boats 2024

Scherzo is a home-built, 14′ power dory. Her hull is from a design by the late Jeff Spira of Huntington Beach, California. Her interior was designed by the builder around an old wooden ship’s wheel discovered in an antique shop on Long Island, NY. Hull construction is plywood sheathed in fiberglass set in epoxy. Her console is painted plywood; other interior structures are from kiln-dried Douglas fir. She is powered with a 20 hp Yamaha outboard. At WOT on a flat sea with one person she can manage 17 kn though she prefers to go 10-12 kn at 5200 rpm. With a cooler helm seat, compass, nav lights, and USB ports for an ipad with the Navionics Boating App, she is set up for extensive coastal day cruising. Her home port is Santa Cruz, California, where she explores the waters of Monterey Bay. Her travels have taken her to the San Francisco Bay, the Sacramento River delta, and British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, Howe Sound, and Indian Arm.
