Varya is mahogany planked over oak frames with a fractionally rigged Sitka Spruce mast and synthetic standing rigging. She was designed to be a racer/cruiser and as a result she is both fast and comfortable. The original owner, a member of the Chicago Yacht Club, wanted a west coast boat and so Varya was built by the well known Kettenburg yard in San Diego. She was raced successfully out of the San Diego Yatch Club until 1980. In 1989 Su Russell and Dave Baker, Jen’s parents, brought Varya to Victoria, B.C. where she underwent a 2 year re-fit. Su and Dave sailed her for 2 or 3 months every summer from Victoria as far north as Klemtu and she visited the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival almost every year. In 2017 we brought Varya to Port Townsend where we have been racing her and gradually restoring her with much help from our talented, local marine trades.
