I have done a lot of boatbuilding through the years but never built a boat from wood strips strictly for the beauty of seeing all of the various woods with their own character bright finished. I had long admired boats that Joe Greenly designed and built but wanted to start from scratch and ultimately use a lot more woods that were selected for their interaction with each other. Light against dark like the Bird’s Eye Maple against the beautiful chocolate brown dark figured WRC. Also matching some unusually figured wood strips port and starboard.
While the wood is beautiful in its own right, in many cases I did not use perfect strips but instead used strips with flaws. As with people in many cases, it is more interesting to see natural imperfections that are beautiful in their own right than to see perfection in every piece.
