I finished building my previous boat (Penobscot 14) in 2020 and right away wanted another build project. Something different. I really liked the look of the Jericho Bay Lobster Skiff that had been showcased in Woodenboat magazine several years ago. But I procrastinated for a few more years. Why would I want a โ€œlobster boatโ€ around here? And the thought of the fiberglass/epoxy work horrified me. (Rightly so!) But I kept returning to the JBLS and finally a good friend pushed me over the edge and I started the build in late 2023. I milled the 1โ€ x 1/2โ€ bead and cove cedar strips from 18โ€™ boards. The transom, keel, stem and rails were mostly got out of two great planks of rough-sawn Sapele. West systems epoxy was used throughout the glassing job. Having built the hull from plans I then had a blank canvas to fit out the interior. Lots of head-scratching and mock-ups but I finally figured it out and so far I think itโ€™s worked out well. She runs true and steady and I couldnโ€™t be happier with the final result. I drop the โ€œlobsterโ€ part of her name because, well, we donโ€™t have lobster here. Crabbing? Maybe after she gets beaten up a bit more in a year or two! She is named for my dear, supportive wife Liz.
