There is nothing quite like watching a classic Maine Lobster Boat cutting through the cold waters with her low freeboard and graceful sheer. The Flying Eagle, as she was originally named, was designed and built by Vinal Beal and launched on Beals Island in 1963, where she earned her keep lobstering until the mid-1990s. She is a traditional “Beals Islanders” or “Jonesporters,” a classic workboat with distinct beauty of purpose – perfectly adapted to the local Downeast Maine fishing conditions – world renowned for their efficient, seaworthy hull form, good turn of speed, rich history and great looks!
After many years of service, several owners and various name changes, FLYING EAGLE was found beached and left to the ravages of harsh New England winters. She was discovered and purchased by Rick Strollo in 2014. Appreciating the rarity of finding a working boat in a condition that could be saved and enjoyed, his aim was to restore and preserve her as authentically as possible and bring her to the Pacific Northwest. At the 2023 Wooden Boat Festival, Mr. Strollo sold her to the current owners, Kevin and Kathy O’Shea. One look at Flying Eagle brought back memories of Kevin’s time lobstering in the waters of Long Island Sound in the 1970’s; he had to have her! She spent the next Spring on the hard for extensive repairs consisting of keel and plank fastening as well as 12 ribs being spliced in. This work was beautifully executed by the knowledgeable team of artisans at Haven Boat Works in Port Townsend. While she is no longer a “clinch nail fastened hull”, her lines and look retain all the features of a skeg constructed, carvel planked Maine Lobster Boat. Continuing the restoration of the Flying Eagle reflects Kevin’s deep appreciation for craftsmanship and history. The Flying Eagle now has a new lease on life and will be seen cruising the local waters, enjoying her retirement days stacked with crab pots rather than lobster pots, pulled with her original, traditional pot hauler.
