The goal in building FIG was to create a small and economical three season cruising boat. After researching many small power boats, John Atkin’s Ninigret came close to satisfying all desires. Just a few topside changes were needed.

She was built true to Atkin’s design from her sheer on down, primarily following the construction guidelines for glued plywood lapstrake. However as a cruiser, she needed a larger interior cabin space. Consequently her sheer was raised by four inches from midships forward, thus giving her the raised deck appearance and extending her LOD by six inches. Also her cabin was extended aft by one full twenty inch station, raised slightly, and provided with ample windows. These modifications come at the expense of her utility as a fishing platform, Atkin’s intended use, but have allowed for much more comfortable cruising accommodations. Two other features further add to her cruising comfort. A second helm station is provided immediately forward of the cockpit and inside the cabin. Helm, throttle, and shift controls are extended to accommodate. Additionally, she has an accessible deck hatch immediately aft of the anchor well in the bow. Anchoring is done while standing in the hatchway. There is no need to traverse from cockpit to bow via the narrow side deck or over the cabin top.

FIG is powered by a 30 hp four stroke Suzuki outboard motor and carries 12 gallons of fuel. She cruises comfortably up to 12 knots.
