Fantasma is a larger version of Matt Layden’s Enigma. Matt is the designer of the well known sharpie called Paradox of which more than a hundred have been built all over the world. The original Enigma was a 12 foot version that had been entered and won the Florida 300 race in her class. A 12 foot enigma has made at least one multiple week passage and stay from Florida to the Bahamas as can be seen in the microcruising.com website. Fantasma is a 16 foot version of the Enigma and the only prototype built so far. Included in the design are Matt’s famous “chine Runner” leeway prevention foils, and Matt’s boom based roller furled balanced lug sail. Both of these features have been copied worldwide. This allows for keel-less winward sailing and raising and furling the sail of any measure. All steering and sail handling is done within the fully enclosed cockpit much like a car is driven from the inside. If now wind is available a yuloh is utilized for human powered propulsion.
