Built in 1913 in East Boothbay, Maine for John Borden II’s Arctic expedition to collect a bowhead whale specimen for the American Museum of Natural History, Adventuress has lived many lives—from private yacht to pilot vessel, and now as a floating classroom and National Historic Landmark.
Operated by the nonprofit Sound Experience, she sails the Salish Sea engaging youth and adults in hands-on programs focused on environmental stewardship, teamwork, and maritime tradition. Participants raise sails, take the helm, and experience the unique demands of life at sea.
A core part of her mission is to provide access to transformative on-the-water experiences for young people—especially those who might not otherwise have the opportunity. Adventuress helps open doors to new perspectives, skills, and confidence through connection with the marine environment.
Join Adventuress—for a dockside tour, or sail with us—at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival. Connect with her storied past and be part of her mission to inspire the next generation of caretakers for our marine environment.
