MOUSE is a classic little gunter yawl, 14’ on deck and 22’ overall including bowsprit and boomkin, with sails beautifully crafted by Schattauer in Seattle. The design was inspired by late-1800s British beach boats…small fishing boats that would set out with a crew of two, along the rugged SE coast of Great Britain. Construction is glued lapstrake, with the original bare hull constructed by a professional in Oregon. The unfinished hull was delivered to the first owner, who unfortunately died not long after taking delivery. The hull was donated to The Center for Wooden Boats, and current owner Marty Loken completed work on the hull, adding a foredeck and aft deck, floor timbers and cockpit sole, rudder and tiller, centerboard, the entire sailing rig, deck hardware, Sapele mahogany cockpit coaming, mahogany rubrails, a pivoting bowsprit that can arch back into the boat if necessary, an easily removed boomkin, bronze side-mounted bowsprit roller, Rocna Vulcan anchor and 9’ 6” spruce oars with carbon-fiber oars that allow for convenient storage along each side of the centerboard trunk. MOUSE feels like a beamy little ship—extremely seaworthy, with room on each side of the CB trunk for full-size camping mattresses and sleeping bags. Storage is available under the forward and aft decks. Thwarts are Sapele mahogany. The boat is faster under sail than most onlookers might imagine, and the gunter yawl rig is an excellent choice when it comes time to reduce sail: The skipper can either reef the gunter mainsail; drop the jib and mizzen sails, or sail with only jib and mizzen in the extreme. Either way, the sailing rig remains balanced. MOUSE is offered for sale only because the owner needs some funding to complete work on his latest project, a 20’ displacement-hulled outboard cabin cruiser of traditional design, with forward cabin, pilothouse with standing headroom and a 9.9hp outboard in a well.
