Your Local Viking Shipbuilder

June 16, 2026

Built for the History Channel by master boatbuilder and owner Jay Smith, the boat showcases the practical ingenuity of Viking construction.

The stem and sternpost of this Viking boat replica came from a Douglas-fir stump and root. Oarlocks are natural grown crooks. That’s exactly the kind of craftsmanship Viking boatbuilders relied on 1,200 years ago.

Built as a replica of a shipsboat found aboard the Gokstad Viking ship, this 21-foot faering features lapstrake planking, carved stems, and a traditional Viking side rudder. It’s a rare chance to get up close to the design that helped Norse sailors travel vast distances across the North Atlantic.

Unique this year is how many faerings will be in Festival. It is rare to see several of these traditional Viking boats in one place. Alongside this Gokstad replica, visitors can also see Eliza, Svvalen, Happy, and Tjeld.
