Jura was commissioned using a design from Doug Peterson that was published in the July 1976 edition of Wooden Boat Magazine. The original design was for a pragmatic, budget, racer-cruiser. What Bent Jesperson built was a modified version of this design, and threw the ‘budget’ portion of the design out of the window, opting for beautiful woodwork and teak decks over plywood and painted decks. Her hull is constructed with red cedar planks over oak frames, all coated in epoxy. The outside of the hull is gives the impression that she is either fibreglass or cold-molded, but this is just the effect of the cedar being wrapped in epoxy. The cabin and cockpit coamings are mahogany, and the deck teak. She was rigged to race, and raced the first several years of her life in the Swiftsure. Over the years she has been meticulously cared for, and in a recent survey it was noted that she is in ‘near pristine condition’. I am her most recent caretaker, and would love to hear from anyone who is familiar with her, and may have any stories from her past that I may not have heard!
