This year marks 100 years of Corsair II, a classic 50-foot bridge-deck cruiser. She was designed by noted naval architect Leigh Coolidge and built in 1926 at Martinac Shipyard in Tacoma for B. F. Jacobs, an avid predicted log racer and officer of the Tacoma Yacht Club. In her early years, she raced extensively in Pacific Northwest waters and even appeared in advertising celebrating Jacobsโ seamanship and victories in rough conditions.
Today, a century later, Corsair II is undergoing a careful restoration to preserve her historic wooden construction and elegant lines. She will appear at the festival mid-renovationโoffering visitors a rare look at a 100-year-old classic, both as she has endured through time and as she is being brought back to life for the next century on the water.
What we love most is her speed and the cozy pilothouse perch, with light pouring in and countless spots to read or write. Sheโs whimsical, spunky, full of personalityโand sheโs always kept us safe (hopefully this year, dry).
