I designed and built this boat after participating in the inaugural Seventy48 with both racing and cruising under oars in mind. While designing it I took inspiration from Whitehalls and Pilot gigs, but didn’t feel the need to be true to any historic type. It was built using modern glued lapstrake construction. Length is 22 feet with a 41 inch beam at the gunwales. The outriggers extend further to accommodate 9-1/2 foot oars. It is set up for tandem rowers on sliding seats. Large enclosed compartments at either end and abundant locations to strap gear in place help keep clutter to a minimum and provide flotation in the unlikely event of a capsize.
With the birth of my first child, a pandemic, and the birth of my second child, this boat has seen less use than I would have liked, but this year I finally made it back to Seventy48. Difficulties finding a partner for the race( oddly enough, not everyone wants to train and then row in a 70 mile race. Wierd), left us with only about 10 weeks of good training time before the race, but we managed to pull off an 11th place finish. I am very pleased with how the boat performed.
