This kayak is more than a wooden boat, it is a final project begun by Matt Duerre and finished, after his passing (March 2026), by his friend and kayak-building mentor, Dave Lake. When Matt was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer several years ago, he began building this kayak as a personal challenge and a labor of love. Matt and his nephew worked on this boat, with advice and help from Dave, for as long as he was able, and when he could no longer continue Dave took up the mantle to complete it.
Now, Dave brings this kayak to the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival in Mattโ€™s honor, as a representation of his life of craftmanship as a carpenter, high school woodshop teacher, wrestling coach, Navy veteran, husband, father, and friend. He is loved, and he will be wholeheartedly missed.
As a final note from Mattโ€™s mentor and finisher of this kayak, I was truly blessed to call Matt my friend and colleague. It was an honor to take over the task of finishing his dream that he started, and I hope I did him, his family, and this boat justice. I loved every minute we had together during our lives and working on this dream boat. Sail on Brother.
