Sea Scouts Row and Sail Longboat in Shipyard Raid Sea Scouts Row and Sail Longboat in Shipyard Raid It was a wet and windy day approaching Westview on July 14th, 2009. Clothes and gear are drying out on the longboat Bear, crewed by the Port Townsend Sea Scouts (SSS Falcon).

The Sea Scouts - SSS Falcon - competed in the annual Shipyard School Raid, a rowing and sailing race for traditional small boats. The Scouts competed in the Northwest Maritime Center & Wooden Boat Foundation's longboat Bear, a 26 foot open boat replicated from the launches of early European explorers of the Pacific Northwest.  Eight boats cruised north on the course of about 170 km through the Gulf of Georgia, Malaspina Strait, and into Desolation Sound. The Scouts trained for several weeks in the waters of Port Townsend Bay in preparation for the sailing trip held in July.

The longboat Bear is available for youth and adult groups to engage in rowing and sailing programs and trips in the San Juan Islands and Puget Sound.
